Full Moon, Streetlight, Last Night in Italy

The view depicted here is from my ancestral home town of Corinaldo in the central Italian Province of Le Marches. I did this sketch on the last night of my most recent visit in 2019. The moon hung low in the evening sky. That and a single streetlight provided the dim illumination in this scene. I liked the contrast of the illuminated wall with the dark doorway on the right, compared with the dark wall and glowing doorway on the left.

This painting is done in Transparent Watercolor on 300gsm Rough Finish Fabriano Artistico Watercolor Paper. The finished painting is layered with 4 coats of Mineral Spirit Varnish with a UV protection level equivalent to museum glass. On top of the varnish is a finish coat of Renaissance Wax, an archival product developed by the British Museum to preserve their delicate artifacts. The finished painting is framed in wood with a linen liner without glass. It is fully protected from moisture and light damage.
