I took a train journey on this vintage steam locomotive last week. It arrived at the station in a huge puff of smoke, emerging from the mist in all its 19-century glory. This is narrow gauge, and it’s a mere 2-feet between the rails, making it the narrowest of narrow. It’s small but mighty, and was originally used to haul timber, ice, and people to the coast for transport by sea to Boston, New York, and beyond.
This engine and others have been carefully maintained and operated by the Wiscasset, Waterville, and Farmington Railway Museum. In this view the engine is on a hand-operated roundabout turning it around to head back up the line.
