The Ochre City ●

I’ve made several visits to the small Italian village my grandparents emigrated from in the last century. The narrow medieval lanes of the village were part of my experience growing up, as faded black and white pictures that hung in our house in America. It seemed like a mythical rather than actual place, seeing it in person much later as an adult was overwhelming and inspiring. This painting represents my first view of the approach. It felt like that moment in the Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy and the trio first see the legendary Emerald City shimmering in the distance.
